Emma Serjeant is an award winning circus maker with a distinctive style. Creating original circus works permeated by a raw, compelling presence and honesty. Emma considers circus to be a dynamic and unique art form displaying great strength, courage and discipline.
After graduating from the National Institute of Circus Arts (Melbourne) in 2006 Emma launched her circus career. First founding a multi art form hub and rehearsal space in Melbourne before moving to Brisbane working for the following three years with C!RCA as an ensemble member. She spent an additional year developing work with the CIRCA Youth Circus and teaching within the C!RCA training centre as Head Trainer, where she developed skills as a producer and creative leader.
In late 2011 Emma co-founded Casus Circus. Casus quickly became an international powerhouse with their hit show ‘Knee Deep’, winning multiple awards and continues to tour the world extensively.
In 2016 Emma created EmmaSerjeantPerformance - ‘Amazing Humans!’ Presenting award winning shows, ESP is a production house for contemporary circus and hybrid performance, embracing work that is unique, challenging and thought provoking.
Under ESP’s banner, Emma created her compelling circus-theatre work GRACE, directed by John Britton (UK) with an impressive score by Ben Ely of 90’s indie-rock band Regurgitator (Australia) and now continues to grow the ESP family of shows in creation, collaboration and on the road.
Emma seeks to push the limitations of circus with her bold, quirky and captivating performance style. She delights in finding different ways to express and evoke emotion. She has a keen interest in collaborating with other art forms, to present work that extends the definition of circus and connects deeply with audiences.
Her recent collaborations and creations have been with Circus Oz (Australia), Les 7 Doigts (Canada), NICA (Australia), battleROYAL (Germany), Elements Collective (Australia), TEOC Circus (Australia), DUENDE Ensemble (UK) and Winifred Haun & Dancers (USA).
Emma is currently creating ‘Flock’ with the graduating year at Aloft Circus Arts, Chicago (USA)
